~Computer Screens Are For Watching TV
COMPUTER SCREENS ARE MADE FOR WATCHING TV
So last night I was searching the internet for an unaired pilot of a TV show called Fearless that The WB was going to bring out, and stumbled upon my new obsession. Not only did I find the episode of Fearless, but I also found the unaired pilot of my all time favorite TV show, Buffy The Vampire Slayer.
First I will say that I watched the pilot of Buffy, and though it was entertaining, I'm sure glad Mr. Joss Whedon had time to go back and change the things he wasn't happy with and mold the pilot into what we know as the episodes "Welcome To The Hellmouth" and "The Harvest". And thank God for the main casting change. Alyson Hannigan brought something incredibly special to the role of Willow Rosenburg, that the other actress (I want to say Riff Randall, but that's the character from Rock-N-Roll High School) just didn't have.
Secondly, I want to say that The WB sucks! Big time! They said they were having problems with Fearless coming together, that it just wasn't falling into place. I watched the pilot and thought it had incredible potential. Hell of a lot more than that sucky Birds Of Prey they tried to shove down our throats.
Incase you're not aware of it, Fearless was to be based on the series of teen/young adult books of the same name. Though I only have the first 3 books in the series (out of like 40 books or more), I think they're very good. It's about a teenaged girl named Gaia Moore who was born without the gene for fear, hence the title, Fearless and could do amazing things.
The TV show had Gaia as a 23 year old agent in the FBI, and personally I think they could have done good things with the show. I read that the part of Gaia (which is played by Rachael Leigh Cook) was offered to Eliza Dushku, who turned down not only Fearless, but a show based on her Buffy character Faith, for Tru Calling, which is no longer on the air.
Yes, Fox is another station that sucks! I'm telling you people, they need to quit going for the overnight huge ratings and forget about these so called "reality" shows and get back to good television. Fox cancelled Dark Angel for Firefly after 2 seasons. Then turned around and cancelled Firefly without even airing a full season, which was a huge mistake! Firefly was definitely one of the best shows ever made!
First Fox messed up by not airing the episodes of Firefly in order... I'm convinced that if they had of played Serenity Parts 1 and 2 as the shows debut (as creator Joss Whedon wanted them to) instead of insisting on another episode (The Train Job), the show would still be on the air. A lot of people saw the first episode The Train Job and gave up on the show, when really that episode did nothing for the show. It showed none of its true genius. It was merely an episode Joss wrote because Fox wanted something more punchy for Firefly's debut.
I'm telling you, the first 5 minutes of Serenity Part 1 is 1000x's better and more interesting than The Train Job in whole. Now I'm looking forward to the Serenity movie (Sept. 2005). Anyway, I was up all night last night downloading shows from this website that I found. There's an English show called HEX that they're trying to market as the "English Buffy". There's only 5 episodes in the first season and though I've only watched the first episode so far, I can say this much... it's no Buffy.
Don't get me wrong, it's interesting enough, but it seems like who ever wrote it, sat down with a pad and pen (or computer, whatever) in front of the television with the first two episodes of Buffy (Welcome To The Hellmouth and The Harvest) playing and jotted down their outline for the show. Even still they managed to miss the mark.
The first two episodes of Buffy was a complete story, where if it never went any further, you wouldn't feel as if you were left with any lose ends needing to be tied up, with HEX... well it wasn't quite a complete story. They focused much too much on the heroine's crush on the popular jock boy, and her desire to hang with the snooty popular girls. Every now and again they'd throw in a flash or dream of the supernatural storyline that you know is going to come into play sometime, the show is named HEX is it not?
For the most part, it focuses on Cassie's life as the smart, pretty, blonde who is somehow an outcast at school, mainly because she's a bit shy. Not only is she an outcast, but she has a lesbian best friend (shades of Buffy) who is also an outcast.
Cassie sneaks down into the school's basement or whatever for a smoke and happens upon a secret hiding place in the floorboard where an old cross and a thing that resembles an old vase with etching on it. She cuts her finger on the bottom of the "vase", I'm guessing to bond with it, and from there she gets little flashes of things and starts to have strange dreams, but that is still not the focus of the storyline. She realizes she has the powers, but still... not the focus.
The story still focuses on her wanting the popular boy. Not until her popular "friends" screw her over does the story start to steer back to the real interesting part, but by this time, the show is nearly 50 minutes over... no kidding. The next 10 minutes is spent setting up the supernatural part for the last 11 minutes of the show. In the last 11 minutes (of 71 minutes of show) they try to go full force into the supernatural part of the show, where she all of a sudden knows stuff and faces off with a god knows how old bad guy, who needs a willing sacrifice to remain young and evil... or some crap like that. And guess who he chooses but Cassie's poor outcast lesbian roomy.
I know I'm talking crap about the show, but it's not all bad. Not quite Buffy, but not bad. I don't give up on shows after watching only once, unless of course it's just pure crap with no redeeming quality to them what-so-ever!!! Birds of Prey anyone... though to be fair, I did watch more than one episode of that too.
Anyhow, now I am downloading episodes of LOST and Tru Calling, so let me get back to that! The link incase you're interested is...
